The latest Appy Bonsai update did not roll out as expected. A few days after its release, the team had to urgently revise its strategy, making different decisions depending on the platform.
On iOS, the situation is now stable. Version 5.1.3, available on Apple’s App Store, fixes the main issues encountered after the recent redesign of the app. Users can once again navigate normally after a period of disruption caused by significant technical changes.
On Android, the situation is more complex. Faced with persistent issues on certain devices, the team made a rare decision: temporarily revert to the previous version, 5.0.2, on the Google Play Store. This choice aims to ensure a stable experience while the issues introduced in version 5.1 are fully resolved.
The root of these difficulties lies in a technical constraint imposed by the Android ecosystem: support for 16 KB memory pages. This change required a deep rewrite of a large part of the app’s code. Despite testing, unpredictable behavior appeared on some devices after the large-scale rollout.
The issues observed are limited but significant enough to affect usage: major slowdowns, unstable navigation, and sometimes the need to restart the app. The most critical issue, however, concerns the failure to recognize Premium subscriptions for some users.
In concrete terms, some active subscribers temporarily lose access to features they have paid for. This unacceptable situation is a top priority for the team. Fix efforts are primarily focused on this point to restore normal access for all affected users.
A new corrective version for Android is currently under development. The goal is to reintroduce the improvements of version 5.1 without compromising stability, while ensuring reliable subscription recognition.
This temporary rollback illustrates a pragmatic decision: it is better to ensure reliable operation than to maintain an unstable version. In a highly fragmented environment like Android, this kind of trade-off is sometimes unavoidable.
Finally, the Appy Bonsai team reminds users that every piece of feedback is taken into account and directly contributes to improving the app. In this delicate phase, the priority remains clear: fix quickly, stabilize durably, and maintain user trust, especially that of subscribers.
